What’s the magic number 10, Mike?

10 employees, thats when you start making real money, anything else between 2 and 10 is just that...inbetween.

When you get to 10 you should be able to afford a manager to deal with the headaches, step back, and rake in the profits

Over ten is good, fifteen is better if you can keep them all busy. Not so sure about stepping back and raking  in the profits at that point but life does become a lot easier. Had to have six months off recently with a knackered back and the bastards not only managed just fine without me they never even missed me. I can feel another knackered back coming on 😀

Thanks all I hear the good and not so good side!

To answer your question Steve re advertising I have a SEO'd site (which rates highly when searched but only in my general area) and I use adverts in parish magazines, thats it. The next question really from me is how to increase the income or work?

Should I be looking for commercial contracts, if so any advice on how to do/find this would be great.

Rather than merely having the patience of Job, you have the patience of Bob.

I'd say you have to look in to getting some form of accreditation such as Chas registered or safe contractor etc, as bigger contractors early give you the time of day if you don't have one or some of these.

But as others have mentioned this brings on bigger headaches, more time in the office sorting out crap paperwork and bigger companies who want to employ you want the job done yesterday and will wait right up until the 3 month make to pay you.

If you want to increase profits I would advertise more and possibly try and cover a slightly wider area and maybe have a small team running around doing the smaller jobs hedge trimming and small trees and the main team with you in going out to do the bigger stuff (jobs where you want to make sure everything is running smoothly).

Thank way you could get away with just getting a big trailer and a small truck for the second team or if you have that or no someone who does factor them in to cost.

This being said I am myself looking in to getting Chas registered but thinking do I really need the stress of bigger contracts.

 Just my two pence

So whats the general thoughts on Accreditation bringing more work?

Do you have to seek the work still and if so does accreditation provide more options to view, have early warning of or understand where such contracts exist? I currently am unaware of where to search for such contracts/work.

I have often thought of going down the AA/CHAS route but was unsure if it was really worth doing so to be honest.
