Hi all

Just wondering if any can id this which I have found on a oak stem about 1m from the base, my thoughts are phytrophthora, if so is it worth sending samples to be tested to confirm this?

The crown has been reduced in the past but the new growth has now died

As always thank you for any help in adavance

Not necessarily Phytophthora, but wouldn't rule it out.

Also consider;
AOD (Acute Oak Decline) any small 'D' shaped exit holes on the stem
Armillaria sp (Honey fungus) any rhizomorphs in the soil around the base of the tree, under the bark?

I’ve seen this on some Oaks too recently but higher up.
What is the significance of the D shaped holes David? What are they caused by ?

Got a picture of the bottom of the tree?  These infections may be soilborne, so replacing the soil and drying out the flare is one treatment.  Attached tree had similar bleeding lesions.  Blowtorch dried the site and effectively stimulated closure.

I’m confused as to how this might work if the pathogens be they fungal or entomological are present under the cambium layer ?
Is that not like standing in Detox if you’ve got ringworm on your arms ??
