Advice on height reduction

Question

Hi everyone

Ive been asked to reduce the height on a small tree (obviously topping is a no no) im a beginner but i really need the experience and some advice and help on what the best way to go about the work.

Basically a small silver birch (tree in foreground of pic) needs thinning and the tree in the back ground is the one the customer wants the height reduction on, now i would probably prune and thin the tree as best i could but as far as i know there is no real way to reduce the height of a tree without previous maintenance taking place.

Saying that if the customer is adamant that they want the tree topping should i do it anyway? And what would be the best way to carry it out?

I dont want to learn bad habbits or do cowboy work, so please can you guys give me a few pointers, cheers.

Thats not a tree looks like small shrubbery :001_rolleyes:

5 minute job with a silky.

Impossible from pictures to tell what is really, might br a cotoneaster, apple tree or could be  anything....

Different speices respond differently to heavy prunning etc...

Looks like its being topped before lvl across above the blue bird box.
