I had wondered about that! That's very interesting as I would never need to travel with a loaded van and heavy trailer. I'd estimate that my train weight with fully fueled van, 18.5st of me, tools in the back and loaded trailer would be 5100kg max.

I haven't had a look at the tow bars yet, but the vendor of the van (wind turbine engineer) has a 5000kg rated tow bar lined up for it.

Why 5000kg?

You will never get near that.

Very true. I think the chap took the notion of uprated tow bar to an unnecessary level, but it's nice to have redundant strength.

Sure it needs to be type approved now so unless he make lots of them it won't be.

Purely from perhaps hazy recall,

but I remember reading some blurb, sometime in the past 45 years, where a Range Rover, could legally tow 4500kg, if fitted with the optional air brake kit and a pintle hitch.

This would then, by my reckoning,  apply to other vehicles normally rated to tow 3500kg.

If the MAM's, GTW's, etc etc etc allowed.

ahhh yes i read similar bout 5 years ago.  My mate had a Disco and when we thumbed thru the owners manual i noticed it made reference to 4200kg towing if a tacho was fitted (and i think the brakes were upgraded)

Interesting though it is, the possibility of extending the towing capacity past 3500kg, it's not for me. Too much hassle, paperwork and cost. Just not something I need.

I'll speak to SV Tech as soon as I get to work today.
