That’s a really interesting job, what was the general outcome in terms of state of decay?

 

Assuming they were elm or oak?

Dave, they had no surviving records of their construction so the timber used was unknown. There was definitely oak in there and pine but the central decay was quite extensive. Some awesome joinery skills though!,  they were all hand carved in sections and connected without any nails or screws.

They are now being dismantled for full restoration, destined to take a prominent place in Plymouth's new naval museum I believe.
