MOT changes May 2018

I see changes are to be made to the MOT test.

 

Advisories will be classed depending on how serious the fault/s are.

 

If I'm reading it correctly we won't be able to drive a vehicle back from the test centre if it falls into the dangerous category.

 

My MOT is due in June, so I will push it through the test early May to avoid it this year. I don't think there is anything wrong with my van but I'd prefer to not have the hassle of trailering it away should it fail.

Sounds that way
Going to be a real pain for those of us who carry out the majority of repairs ourselves, many people who would normally sort a problem themselves are just going to end up getting the garage to sort it instead of having to trailer something home which could lead to abuse by some garages saying we can't let you take your vehicle till we have fixed it, here's our overinflated bill....
Think what I'll start doing is arranging with the garage we use for us to take the vehicles in a week or so before it's due for a check over which would give us time to fix anything that's needed and I've not spotted

Why don't you do what everyone else does and get it tested for MOT and fixed at the same time and then passed?

Are you suggesting that everyone crawls under their vehicle or as a pre-MOT before they take their vehicle for a test?

Nope!

 

I'm suggesting take it for it's service and MOT at the same time. I just give my vehicles a full service once a year and then MOT them. Usually there are few or no problems. Just did my last one and it passed with zero advisories. But if it needs something it needs something.

Yes, so do I.  Who decides if it's a minor or major fault?

 

The mot tester perhaps? what one tester classes as major another tester might class as minor. Then you can't take it away without a trailer.

Thought that was the case with major faults at the moment as I had a fail on landy 2 years ago and was told to drive home only and get it repaired.

This is the point. You can at the moment drive it home or to a repair shop of your choice. The change will mean it doesn't leave the test centre until it's repaired or it goes on a trailer.

The variance between testers, within the same centre, is astonishing. 

 

These se changes won’t effect us much, what with being literally next door to our MOT centre
