Hi

I know that a vehicle over 3.5t needs an 'O' licence, but is a vehicle under 7.5t non hgv, thus not restricted by all off the laws associated.

Hear from all you good people soon.

'o' licence is dependent on use not weight. You can drive a 16 tonne tipper without an o licence as long as you NEVER carry a load for anyone but your own personal use. The law is unbelievably complex, and is almost on an individual case by case basis. My missus has been drivin 7.5 ton horse boxes on a car licence for years, and been checked by VOSA on 5 seperate occasions, and has NEVER talked about o licences with them (everything but mind you!!!!):001_smile:

Anything over 3.5 tonne comes under all the hgv regs, including drivers hours, o licence, PMIs etc.

Unless you are claiming an exemption, as tommer says.

Hi O licence is required by any company who runs any lorry over 5 ton, 7.5 ton is not hgv unless you put a chipper or tow with it.

I have two 6.2 ton and one 7.5 - Any one with pre 97 licence can drive 6.2s as long as truck and chipper do not exceed 8.25 ton but only driver with class one hgv can drive cargo and chipper/ trailer- But need to check licence as we have had lads who past driving test after 97 and can not tow anything on any size pick up , small tipper or large tipper but can drive up to 3.5 ton.

There would have to take a driver trailer course. Know thats a little away from what you asked but a pig tom get around.

Hope that helps

Regards

Keven

A friend of mine has a livery yard, and has to transport others horses to and from, and had to take hgv for her horse lorry as it was deemed hire/reward. Not really any help on this thread though.

This has been done here before but they can tow a 750kg trailer or upto 3500kg max train weight as long as the car empty weighs more than the trailer full (or some thing like that). So a 2000kg car can tow a 1500kg trailer on a post 97 licence.

Its 4250Kg train weight. Ie 3500kg + 750kg trailer:
