Any ways to deal with filthy neighbours?

I regularly deliver logs to a lovely old lady who lives next to a pub in a beautiful little village. They have a shared alleyway which the pub piles high with bin bags, leaking cooking oil cans, plus all the old kegs also domestic trash like bikes and shelves. When I have been there when it's  warm it stinks or rotting food waste. Now the lady is simply too nice to make much of a fuss but they are taking the pee IMO. She had to beg them yesterday just to clear a slot for me to be able walk down to carry the logs in today.

 

It really is filthy mess and has been like that for 10 years apparently. 

So what can be done to get them to clear it up? Think someone did call environmental health once about the rats but nothing was done.

 

Todays delights include a bag of pheasant remains

Environmental Health first, then local papers/tv if EH don't get it sorted. If it's a tied pub rather than a free house. the brewery or chain that owns it may be worth talking to as well.

Nice idea Felix but cant work out if it's a free house or not. How do you tell?

 

Horrible situation really as they lady does not want to have a big falling out with the pub but any presure on them to sort it could result in them getting nasty with her.

The whole situation is awkward as they lady does not want to have a big falling out with the pub but any presure on them to sort could result in them getting nasty with her.

The free house/ tied pub should be evident with any branding or trademarks from a chain, such as menus, offers etc. The plate over the door may help also. If not, the local licensing authority should be able to help, or a Google search. With regards to the falling out, she can either put up with the rubbish for the sake of a quiet although unhappy life or take the chance on the outcome of getting it sorted. No easy answer on that one, I'm afraid.

She might be able to win a limited victory by ensuring that the alley at least, as it is shared, remains unobstructed by either party.

I know and should probably not be sticking my nose in but find the whole situation horrid. Little old lady being taken advantage of for be to nice. pi$$es me right off. Sure it happens up and down the land but don't make it right. Will give her a call and see if she is happy for me to report them. A few words on their Facebook page might help as well.

Tread carefully on that one. You have to be able to prove anything you claim. There is a peculiarity in UK Defamation legislation in that it is for the accused to prove their claim, not the person bringing the suit who needs to prove the accused's claim to be false. It's why we see so many overseas cases brought here.

Was only going to say what I have taken pictures of plus the smell.

Name and shame.  Don't think I'd be keen on using a pub/restaurant with a back yard like that.

Tempted but will hold off for the time being. Spoken with the lady and she was happy for me to report to EH which I have now done. Turns out a good friend of mine knows the big cheese in EH and reckons it actionable so we will see were this goes.
