Petition for legislation for winter and all season tyres

I have just been buying a new set of tyres.

The 3 things they are now rated on bear no relationship to cost.

You can get cheap tyres with a good wet stopping distance and dear ones with a bad grade.

Winters do tend to get a lower wet grade than summers. In the main due to tread pattern on winters being about surface contact & small sipes & summers about big water channels.

Pretty sure all terrain or m+s tyres are a compromise they are not a winter tyre or summer tyre. They come at a cost a trade off if you like, they have a higher silica content and thus will wear quicker.

That said if following our speed limits they are a good compromise, why do we really need summer tyres? We very rarely have summersxD

m+s tyres though should not be treated as a winter tyre as they are not a winter tyre and if you live where we have a winter and the miles justify the risk you should use winter tyres.

All terrain are horrendous in winter, I started a thread on this just the other day

Completely agreed. I had a brown trouser moment a few years back in the old Navara on BF Goodrich A/Ts where is just went straight on (rather than turning left as was intended) on light snow at low speed. No damage thankfully, but they are as poor as summer tyres in the snow

IIRC the one's Steve mentioned are winter rated as I have them on my 4x4 and would be legal under your proposal?

An excellent demonstration of the pointlessness of the sort of legislation Big J wants. All this bollocks does is keep politicians and civil servants in jobs and everybody else paying for it. We need less micromanagement, not more.

I’ve just done 2000 miles driving to Morzine and back in a Navara on BFGoodrich all terrains. There is a lot of snow and ice on the roads in the mountains at present, and the return trip (across France yesterday) was extremely wet at times. The tyres (and vehicle, though not relevant to this thread) were faultless - plenty of grip and stability in all conditions including prolonged 180kmh autoroute running. I wouldn’t rush to fit anything else personally, I disagree that these aren’t suitable winter tyres.
