Planting trees

Recommended Posts

Quick one for the experts..

In work I am unofficially in charge of most things forestry by unofficialy I mean out of the 12 of us that manage the 360 acre site I'm the one with the most knowledge and quals and that isnt a lot.

We have been given 150 trees to plant by the boss.

We have :

50 oak

50 hornbeam

50 wild cherry

Sorry I don't know the sub species.

Basically I want to try and find out.

1. Do I need to add anything to the soil we are a costal / sandune site with very sandy soil.

2. Spacings. obviously in 50 years or so when these trees begin to reach maturity they will require a lot of space.

3. They are not being planted until January. They are around 6" in length with small root balls wrapped in black cellophane. What is the best way to store them?

Most of our woodland is pines, larch, fur trees and a small orchard.

Thanks in advance
