Bill, I associate it with stumps and colonization of dead decaying matter. And I've only seen it in the root sinuses (where I'd expect some dead matter). Never seen it on the actual buttresses, so maybe a little further investigation. David will be along later to say that all the aforesaid is total billhooks and don't concern yourself[emoji5][emoji38]

Yes that's why I was doubting my ident as it seems to be growing in the bark/moss of a seemingly health syc. Good leaf cover, no shabby bits of bark etc or obvious cavities etc.....

Here is that stump puffball.

It appears to be growing right on the bark of the sycamore....which is def alive

All the common Pholiota have attached gills but never decurrent. If anything they're sinuate. So Id' say these ones possibly aren't Pholiota.

If anything the sightly decurrent gills and stem ring are reminiscent of Armillaria.

Sorry Bill, what looked like a ring on the stalk in the earlier pics - leaking to Armillaria, almost certainly wasn't looking at this photo. I'm going back towards a Pholiota. But still with reservations until I can get to some books.
