Staff holidays, taking too many..

Just seeing what other employers think about this.

Had a member of staff take quite a few holidays this year which is fair enough as he wants to spend time with family but this has used up his entitlement leaving non for the Christmas break so realistically will have to have unpaid time off as I really don't want to be sorting work for him over the holidays as he won't really want to be in just splitting logs, to add to this he's just told me he needs 3 days off at the end of this month but understand it'll be unpaid but Carnt understand why I'm pissed off with him. It's going to leave me even shorter staffed than I already am and he's not in earning and getting through the workload.

Really just seeing how others handled this sort of thing, is it you have x amount of days and that's it or do you allow unpaid leave on top of this or what?

I have had this and some staff find it difficult to understand that it costs more than just their days wages.  If you take additional time of unpaid then it should theoretically effect your holiday entitlement... and it is a pain in the planning..

I try to be fair and accommodating and will let guys work a day in liew on Saturdays if they need extra days off.

We also stipulate in the contract that we can choose when a certain number of the days off are as we want a shutdown over Christmas..

Mine get 4 weeks per year plus bank holiday but 2 weeks are pre booked for Christmas shut down, it’s in there contract they have signed, once there leave has gone through the year it’s unpaid at my discretion and work load.

This thread has reminded me that of one of the benefits I get from working for the MOD...
35 days annual leave
18 days special leave (members of the Army reserve)
6 months full pay if sick.

But they are strict with it. Once it's gone it has gone.. We have to give 3 up for Xmas but we do get a 3 week break for it so no gripes there
