Tree identification, please.

After a lot of scouring through my Collins tree guide, the closest match I found was the Black cherry (Page 254) the bark is pretty close and the timber looks about the same.

I am not sure if this is the right tree, but it is the closest I could find.

I have included some pics (not mine) of black cherry bark and timber, for you guys to compare.

Thanks for that, but I'm not sure.

 

The heartwood on mine is quite dark brown, like walnut but with medulary rays visible. The cherry looks too golden.

 

I have looked through several books but don't seem to get the bark, sapwood, heartwood just right.

I agree, in retrospect the heartwood is too light, none the less I will keep searching

this is a very interesting sample of wood and not one that i immediately recognise...

 

i don't think there is any chance of it being a prunus species but there is a possibility of it being an acer but which one i don't know. the darker heart does not say acer in my opinion.

 

i'm going to suggest that it's a species of magnolia and looking at some images of bark it's not too dissimilar from "magnolia acuminata" which is called cucumber tree in the states and had no odour.

 

 

endgrain analysis could be required here.

ok scratch that last post.

 

i've just looked at the endgrain very closely and i'm fairly sure that this is an elm species but that usually has an odour when green and you say this has none.

 

 

any chance of getting a sample?

I'd go with maple.

i just need a lump so i can clean up the endgrain and look closely at it but a bowl blank would be nice...

 

i'll probably only be able to narrow it down to the genus (presuming it is elm) as the leaves would be needed to tell most elm species apart.
