Hi Guys.

I'm carving a penguin from birch and trying to do all the work with the saw but the chain leaves parallel ridges about 2mm high, and I can't get a nice smooth finish, any and all advice wecome.

Can you brush them away with the chain?  holding the bar at an angle to the wood so  you are only touching with the outside edge/corner of the chain.  moving upwards i find gives a cleaner finish

Yes as Dave has already suggested, using the flat side of the bar rather than the cutting edge to skim across the surface
