Still looking for the perfect log pick

Been using the same for years now but it's branded as stubai ? Great picks ! Also brought an ochsenkopf different to the one above with a thicker glass fibre type handle and pointy heavy head and it was a waste of time.

Yes . I have that one . Got when I got Wood Chuck lifter jobbie . Works fine for me . Thought the short point/hook would be a problem but no . its fine . Has a retractable loop/noose for dragging brash but never use that bit .

I've got the bison one too and its got a good head but my handle was awful, some sort of softwood, fat and heavy and broke very quickly, think I'd only processed about 6-8m3 of wood with it.  I re handled it with a hickory handle, cheap one of ebay.  It made the tool feel soooo much better, better balanced, more slender and lighter handle.  How long it will last I'm not sure... the grain orientation on the cheap handle is poor

Having now had the Fiskers for a while I have warmed to it. Yes it's rather light but you get used to that by being more assertive when striking it into some wood. The handle is a great shape and easy to hold while dragging large roundwood around. The reason I  initially was not keen on it was it didn't hold too well but after a slight sharpen it's made a world of difference. Not had it slip out once yet since sharpening it up and one of my regular clients who I cut for also now likes it a lot. 

 

Not quite the perfect log pick but much better than I first thought.

I'm thinking of getting the ochsenkopf 1100mm wooden handle one - nice and long - I don't see the point of getting a short one that you still have to bend to pick logs up off the floor.
@mattyf I hope this is not the one you found to be not to your liking?

That did not come out right - meant to say Ochsenkopf long wooden handled 1100mm looks good and long for a taller sided to save bending - MattyF would you mind telling what did you find was wrong about the Ochsenkopf one?

If it works for you [emoji1303] I preferred the Oregon stubai ones , thought they performed a lot better.. but every ones going to have a different opinion and technique.

Thanks mattyf - I don't actually know what works for me yet as I haven't got one yet, ignore my first post which didn't actually post what I'd written !

but I am looking to buy one to save my back at the yard and on jobs - so interested in opinions of who's used the different brands already:
- Ochenskopf 1100 mm (= 43.3" )at Clark Forest is the longest one I could find online - but I have heard some reservations about the "sticking power" of the point.
The Oregon one is nicely shaped and a nice point - but a bit short for a tall person at only 28" - I don't see the point of getting a log pick / hookaroon / pickaroon if you still have to bend to get it stuck in and pick stuff off the floor, even more so if the piece is not directly below you because then you need more length again -
Then there's the logrite hookaroon - 36" long but the aluminum round handle won't orient the pick point in your hand by feel as you pick it up it - and maybe the point looks a bit fragile?
The handle May be tougher than a wooden handle though ...
Leaning towards the Ochsenkopf at the moment I think ... @NI Tree you sound happy with yours?
