Belt drive are slower running and quieter. I have a direct drive 3hp 90 litre and it struggles to run any rotary tools like die grinders and cut off tools for any length of time. I can spray paint with a hvlp gun (uses about 30psi) and the compressor fills up while the gun is still open but a die grinder runs it down in no time and you have to wait for the tank to fill so I use a Dremel now.
