I think I've a copy of that book, although I forget reading that particular passage. 

 

The history of arboriculture and forestry is fascinating, what our predecessors got right, and really wrong. I've been reading a bit about the Davey Tree Co recently and a lot of ideas were pretty near the mark ( and a lot way off)

 

What's that saying? 'Standing on the shoulders of giants'.

Really??? I dhave thought you would have known it was old science just by reading it. The book is from the 1920's btw. 


Well I haven't read it you toenail! And when I said "digging" I was being flippant.
With some of the bollocks that comes up on this forum sometimes it's hard to tell what was meant to be up for a laugh, there's another thread where Olly spikes trees to prune them so this didn't seem that outrageous.
