The lathe is record power CL3. The pre 2016 style. The problem I'm having is the locking mechanism on the banjo springs back when it's pushed right in. Maybe it's more to do with the banjo rather than the rest. But if I loosen it so it's more positive in this position I think it might be too loose in normal position where it outside of the bed bars

It can go to within about 10mm but then sometimes the lock is unreliable

Sounds like the banjo lock is a bit squiffy, it should lock anywhere you put it on the bed bars. I had a similar issue on an Axminster lathe, a bit of tinker time sorted it. Check all is straight and square and clean.
