They've got the 'do my trees' mindset because that's just what you do, as far as they're concerned. The notion that the trees don't need 'doing' is incomprehensible to them. Try explaining that any pruning will inevitably lead to reactionary growth, locking them into a vicious circle of further pruning, and you might as well be talking Martian.

There is probably nothing you can say or do which will satisfy them, the fact that they can't articulate what exactly they want is probably a good excuse to decline the job.

I'm with Stubby on either of his recommendations: a 100% reduction or leave well alone.

If the client doesn't have a particular need to meet, then you're unlikely to satisfy them. If you muck around with the trees they aren't going to look good, and it will be your fault.

thanks folks, spoke to them today, politely told them I wasn't prepared to work on the trees as anything I did would jeopardise the health of the trees and create an eyesore, meeting them tomorrow to discuss other work around the garden that will be more beneficial:thumbup:

I can't help wondering whether the root of this is some sort of misunderstanding of a duty of care. It sounds like the situation may have resolved itself but if not one way forward would be to suggest having an inspection by a qualified arboricultural consultant.

Although apparently completely unnecessary in this case, it might allay any fears and would show categorically that they had met any obligations - in fact they would have hugely exceeded them but if it makes them happy....
