Thanks all. I did suspect softwood but wanted to be sure. I will take a few more pics tomorrow when I'm back at the yard. The fresh cut bark from the too of the log also looks like softwood to me but I'm far from an expert. Spruce or latch would still be better for us than a horse chestnut mind.
