Smoking Hilux

So they eventually called me and said it was "much better". So I went and checked it out only to find there was no change - still smoking. So I asked them please not to call me again unless it's fixed or replaced. Then they called again yesterday and said that they changed the injectors and that its now definitely sorted. That seems to have done the trick - no more smoke. Can't understand why the injectors needed changing after only 5000 miles

I suppose faulty parts can happen on the finest of products.

I just had to send back a £3K piece of electrickery because of one faulty push button. Finest quality kit, and one small fault, it happens.

 

As to why they could't diagnose your problem sooner I'm a bit baffled. Presumably constant smoke solved by changing the injectors means one or more was sticking open. That should have been obvious to see on the 'pooter as the fuel rail pressure would have been below the correct value?

Seems to be fine now. I agree - I'd have thought such a basic problem would have been easier to diagnose. They seemed to be obsessed with 'contacting Toyota to see what they want us to do next' - presumably because it is still under guarantee. A couple of weeks earlier they completely replaced the main wiring loom because the engine warning light kept on illuminating. Apparently that fault was not related to the injector fault. Methinks I got a Friday afternoon model here

I didn't believe in Friday afternoon jobs until I had a disco 4 from hell. A lot of people get on very well with them. It's strange how some vehicles have problems and others with same conponents never miss a beat.

I think the hilux is still one of the best trucks out there and hopefully will now give you years of trouble free service.

If the the wiring loom was faulty may be this affected the injection and damaged the injectors.

At least it's under warranty and Toyota are picking up the bills

So nearly three years down the road and the Hilux still smokes. After the injector change it started smoking about a  couple weeks later. Every time I took the car back to the suppliers - Snow's Toyota (Hedge End) - they gave me the same old story - "Its smoking because it has such low mileage". On April 2nd 2019,with about 10k miles on the clock,  I took it back to Snow's and asked them to please sort it out once and for all. They have had it for 9 months now and they tell me they have tried this and tried that but they can't ascertain why it's smoking and do I want them to carry on looking for the problem or do I want to come and collect my car? I feel they are trying to wear me down with time and so give up and collect the car with a still smoking exhaust. Thankfully I'm retired and don't depend on the car for my livelihood. In the meantime I continue the wait driving around in my little rinky-dink Aygo courtesy car. If I take the car back now, is it going to pass MOTs a year or two down the road? What about its resale value? So where do I go from here?

I'd ask them to buy it back given that they sold you a car with a fault that they are unable to resolve.  What sort of price would then be the argument but note that the courtesy car is costing them money plus hours spent trying to fix it.  I suspect though it will depend on how they are incurring costs.  Are they having to foot the bill or do they have an overall insurance to cover warranty claims.

 

Why would you accept the car back with an unresolved fault and no compensation?

I would simply say that, despite their best efforts, your consumer rights have been infringed and that you would like a full refund without delay. You have been very patient and forgiving, they haven't resolved the problem to your satisfaction and while they have supplied a loan car, it is not a fair substitute for the 4x4 you paid for and are entitled too. A full refund is what is needed, don't entertain anything less. Go to get advice from the CAB who will contact the trading standards people. Good luck.
