Which watch for Christmas

My wife has gave me an 'IOU a watch' as a Christmas pressie, she didn't want to buy me one as I am fussy when it comes to certain things, tools and watches being good examples.

Some of the things I like in a watch:

Simple

Mostly numbers not a face full of dashes.

Good contrast between face, numbers and hands

Good vision at night, being luminous for only 15 minutes after the lights go out is no use to me.

Not delicate, cos I ain't.

The closest I have found is a Citizen BN0110 but it has a Royal Marines wording on the face, which would have been fine if I was in the RM but I wasn't.

Under £300

I have worn £20 Timex Expedition watches for the last 15 years which are indiglow and are great but my wife wants me to have a good watch.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Cheers

Get another Timex and buy her something with the change. I've had mine over 20 years and it's lost a lot of its functions but it still tells the time.

😀 All I want a watch to do is tell the time so three hand on it will do just fine.

I wear watches and have quite a few which I choose between, depending on what I feel like. I tend to go for mechanical watches, mostly automatic movements and generally older.

With your budget, I suggest going for a good quartz rather than a cheap mechanical movement which won't last well and will be impossible to repair. You could have a look at Christopher Ward which are UK designed and based, although the movements are Swiss - view all and sort by price and you'll find they start at your budget although the choice is limited https://www.christopherward.co.uk/watch/view-all-watches?dir=asc&order=price#maincontent . I have one of theirs (automatic movement) as does a friend of mine and they are bombproof - it has been up mountains, worn whilst angle-grinding etc. and is still decent (and the lume lasts well - still glowing in the morning).

You could consider secondhand if you fancy a reasonable quality mechanical movement. I tend to ask in watch shops as they often give them a check over so less of a risk. Be warned though the collecting bug can get expensive.

I normally wear a throwaway quartz for work (or use my phone at present ) and one of my better ones other times.

I wear a GShock everyday for work and it is bomb proof, so far.

Paid about 60 quid, about half price. Plenty of styles to choose from. My main concern cern was the vibes. I had a Seiko Kinetic and had to have the cell replaced twice. It is a bit old but the chainsaw vibes over charged it and knackered the thing.

Victorinox basic but reliable, not bad looking also.
