fs36 stimmer won't start?

Once the diaphragms have gone out of shape, which they certainly will have done, they will not function correctly ever again.

 

Sure, you might get it working after a fashion, but it will not be right.

 

I never reassemble a cleaned carb without new diaphragms, after all they are pretty cheap.

 

These ebay carbs at £7 (really?) might be OK, I have never tried them. But when even Zama can't make a good carb these days how on earth can a knock off copy with inferior materials be any good?

 

Walbro carbs all the way for me, and where I can replace a Zama with an equivalent Walbro I always do.

 

Good advice, try a new carb kit and it will probably fix the issue. Worth checking the fuel line isn't holed or softened significantly and fit a new fuel filter - they can dry up and become blocked!

Have you tried a different plug, and checked you have a good spark?

If you have damp on the plug it sounds like you are getting fuel, but you could try a small ammount of petrol/2stroke oil, down the plug hole, and see if that gives you any firing.

I tried a cheap carb in an old Husky strimmer, and then ended up with he old one back on.

I'm not far from you and could test compression. It's not a big job to put a carb kit in, how old is it? probably never been changed from new. Unless someone has fiddled with the adjusting screws on the carb since it was last running they should be right.

I just had a freebie chain saw that wouldn't run properly, a new fuel line and filter sorted it.

If not sure what your doing, try watching this guy.

Dismantled it all today.

 

Piston looks shiny, fuel filter seems healthy, and carb diaphragms look OK as far as I can tell - not totally sure what I was looking at really. Anyway, after a bit of cleaning I wrestled it all back together and managed to get it smoking, then running on choke. The head seems to spin even with the choke on, so it.might need a bit of adjustment, but at least there is life. And I know a lot more about its internals than I used to, like where to find the high and low screws.

Running on Choke "Can" mean that you have a fuel starvation issue . Old metering diaphragms and impulse pump diaphragms "dont always" give away there "true' condition so I to (along with others) suggest you put a full carb kit in to eliminate what "could be " a week action of the fuel pump diaphragm.Once that is in and you make sure the metering needle is ok and the forked/tab top arm is set at the correct hight .....you can then set the carb up to the "basic settings" for the L and H needles (if fitted) .

Running it with the choke on will increase revs, therefore head will spin.

What happens when you shut the choke off?

Does it die?

If it does, like Sawchip said you have fuel starvation, check your fuel pipe and filter, if you have a cracked fuel pipe you will be drawing air and not enough fuel, also check fuel tank breather, the carb won't draw enough fuel if air can't get in to replace the fuel.

Well, I discovered that I was resting it on the trigger when I started it, so that might be why the head was spinning! I hadn't put any fuel in it, I was just pulling it over to check it still had resistance and that I'd put it back together right. So it conked out pretty quickly. Will try with more fuel when I get another chance.

Take the point about carb kit, and will bear it in mind. But so far, it seems to run better than I expected given it's been sitting for ages. Cheers. :thumbup:

Hi all

 

Had another go at it today. It'll run (a bit rough) on choke with half throttle, but if I take the choke off it dies. I took the fuel filter off altogether, and the fuel line appears to be crack free. Plug still damp, and if I take.it out and turn it over there's a fine spray of fuel from the hole. Also, if I.empty the fuel tank and pull it.over to clear.out the last drops of fuel, it starts.more easily and runs quicker and smoother. So.I assume the carb is the problem? Didn't check the tank breather, but there was no hiss when I took the cap off, so don't think it's that.

 

I'd slightly rather fit a new carb than mess with a carb kit. But the only replacement carb I can find in the UK is 90 odd quid! At that price I'd just buy a florabest strimmer from lidl! That may be the best solution in the end anyway. Can anyone point me to an fs36 carb at a good price? Or the best place to buy a decent carb kit?.(I've seen a few on eBay, but don't know if they'd be any good)
