You should be able to rebuild the rear diff. I would drain the oil/ sludge and replace with decent lsd oil and try again.

How are you testing the diff?

Iv run a number of that age rangers for years and never had any diff problems.

Also with regard to the diff breathers, if you are going to be wading alot then you can take the cap off and fit a hose over the end into the engine bay so its is clear of the water

Hi Dave, coffee sludge type stuff in rear diff. Got her up on blocks, took her to 60 mph then turned her off, got back underneath & listened, hard to say without being under load but there is a definite rumble on the axle. £90 for a rebuild kit of bearings so hopefully won't be too bad, it needs to be cheap cos my dog is currently 4 hours into his operation atm...

do you notice any slack in the drive train? as in when you put it in first at a stand still and begin to releas the clutch is the drivetrain smooth and fluid or clunky and jerky?

the only time ive had vibrations at a set speed its been UJs.. Wheel bearings tend to make a lot of noise but not vibrate, unless theyve collapsed :C

Dont forget the rear diff should be a limited slip, I think the oil takes a bit of a beating. Read somewhere that its good to drop the oil in the rear diff every 5k?

Are you sure its not a UJ?

Yeah it's lsd. 5k miles seems too frequent? But hey could be cheaper in the long run. Definitely not uj's

Yeah I would second checking the uj. My mums disco vibrating was a precursor to a uj breaking up and then flailing a shaft into the bottom of the truck.

Sent from my SM-G900F using Arbtalk mobile app

Had a centre propshaft bearing go & do the same thing, not a nice experience.

That's what I thought it may be, there's a little bit of play in it but I guess there needs to be?
