Maybe whats lacking is the sense of existential security people had in the past. Not financial security, but a kind of moral certainly, a faith in the fundamental stability of society and cultural norms and so on. That's gone, probably since the invention of the bomb, more so since the information age - where "culture" can change so radically from one year to the next. It's pretty stressful.

There's a saying, often misattributed to Gandhi, that goes something like,

 

The truest measure of any civilization is the plight of it's weakest and elderly citizens.

 

My understanding's Pearl Buck, author of The Good Earth popularized the saying?

 

It rings true to me regardless of which sage first uttered it.

No, it isn't rose tinted. Over 1/3 of the population on anti-deppresants will testify to that.

 

Materially well off maybe but utterly miserable.

 

Fair enuff but why is it so much better to live back then, or should I say what do you think is better?

 

Are you sure a third of the population is on antidepressants? No offense but that sounds like total bollocks information.
