Old Mill Tree Care replied to David Humphries's topic in Tree health care
It's been over two years since a post on this thread. Since roughly 2013 I have been reducing Ash trees quite hard and have been finding that the new vigorous growth is resistant to the fungal pathogen, I have had the luxury of monitoring all these dozens of trees. However since summer 2021 I have been taking a more sensitive approach, now only removing the infected wood but taking care to make the pruning cut into the live wood. This so far is working equally as well with out butchering the tree and provoking made reaction growth. experimental trees have shown me that if I only cut to the edge of the infected wood, the infection continues further into the live wood. Makes sense. I'm in south Surrey area FYI. Furthermore, since summer 2023 I started to notice natural recovery anyway in all trees where the infection stage was only mild. So I'm interested in other findings. TIA> -
wood burners
Just messing in the woods replied to daveatdave's topic in Log burning stoves and fireplaces
Is it that time of year yet when we plot to ban those really bright car headlights? -
It is a rehash I think of what was before so anyone with a stove installed won't be required to replace it, just more controls of what you can sell new. It is a Labour thing is week so the Telegraph is very angry this morning. 18 months ago it was a Tory thing so the Guardian was very angry. As for wood - the ready to burn scheme is an attempt to make wood have a maximum moisture content, else it needs to be sold with a note telling you how to dry it and you can only sell limited quantities (? I think)... though of course you can sell it like that and the customer can stash it in the rain by the back porch, there is nothing to require them to keep it dry.
-
Not dirty wood, wet wood. Piles of freshly cut wood delivered to people who know no better trying to burn it because they are so unorganised they didn't get it delivered three years previously and stashed it away to dry in a shed and are too cheap to buy properly seasoned wood.
-
Well I’ve read the article, it’s basically saying they might ban the sale of older less efficient ones, which on the face of it, seems reasonable. The use of the word ‘plots’ and ‘plotting’ in the subheadline whips a few people up which was the intention I suppose.
-
Newer stoves , burn more efficiently and re burn some of the gases , our stove is exempt from the legislation. Second thing yes or apparently so with moisture content .
-
I don’t think you can still buy wood burners that don’t afterburn or something, secondary burn maybe is the phrase. Do they have a law in the uk about moisture content from fire wood suppliers?

Its hornbeam.
-
fair play, after zooming in, beech wouldn't have been my first guess, another guess - it's a broadleaf, another guess horse chestnut
-
Its a load of shite, its people burning 'dirty' wood on a fire, albeit if its tanalised, painted or other shite . That's where the problem lies

Too fluted for beech.
-

-
You really think so?
-
Maybe an escaped pollard of a Hornbeam to be more specific.

Heres a little tip. Next time your topper throws a chain and the drive links get burred so it won’t fit into the guide bar. Re fit the chain super loose, then hold it in its normal position (handle upright as if you were cross cutting a horizontal log) Start the saw and rev it up for 4/5 seconds, the burrs will wear off and the chain will slot into the bar. Stop the saw and tighten to normal tension. Finish the job, collect the money, live happily ever after.

so now I guess the rubber boats will be coming from both directions.

Agreed, Hang on there’s a knock at the door…..
