Now, bearing in mind the only Vanguard I know are the US investment specialist....was this engine playing up before you made any adjustments to anything? Assuming not....white smoke...what does it smell of, burning oil smells like burning oilπ¬, It could be diesel in your fuel....that smells like paraffin as combustion leaves.... paraffin to exit the exhaust, water in the fuel can give all sorts of issues with running so drain off a bit from the carb float bowl in to a glass and look for the water at the bottom of the fluid...it is pretty obvious. It could be a stuck choke, as I said, I don't know the engine but if the choke is stuck shut, white smoke and stalling is the symptom you get 100%. Compare both cylinders for compression, leak down and plug colour. If the head gasket has gone in one, there will be a significant difference. When you stripped the carb, did you pull the main jet AND the emulsion tube...those little holes can get blocked up. I can't say I know that much about mowersπ Good luck

Megan reach out, through a flunky who authenticated the situation, to her father? Just how is that newsworthy and why is she given any attention?

Sorry roys forgot to mention that I have adjusted the valve clearances on both cylinders. My first suspicion when the problem arose was obviously a blown head gasket but can an engine return a reading of 125psi with a blown head gasket? I'm reluctant to take the head off to find out but maybe it's the only thing left to do. The carburettor is the Nikki type with fixed idle mixture valves and limiters in the top so that doesn't help as you only have a very limited amount of adjustment and they come to a stop. Maybe they have moved. If I forced them beyond the limitation does anyone know whether I would break something? Also could a bad idle mixture cause the smoking? Many thanks.

In bed still, tea and crossword while thinking that there is nothing really newsworthy in it. Who gives a toss to Megan Narkle getting some flunky to 'reach out' to her dad!!!? Unload logs and return trailer to mates place while she makes door wreaths. Attic, leak, off.

The price of some of this stuff is unjustifiable. -

Thatβs ridiculous! my boy now has my old carbon geckos. Still going strong but could probably do with replacement straps -
I was looking at the notch carbons as my old geckos are wearing a bit thinβ¦. Nearly 1 k !!!! Iβm gonna have to buy some carbon fibre and add some strips on !

Morning all, Off to collect a giveaway floor mounted pillar drill then just pottering about. I agree entirely with the sentiments of where did stiff upper lip go, only to be replaced by mass bosom heaving public emotion. Rant over.

Havenβt paid a huge amount of attention either for obvious reasons, although even when I was still climbing i was started to get over the excitement of new things -
I must admit Iβve not really being paying much attention to new climbing kit , looking around as I replacing most of it the other week I was surprised to see how much stuff was notch.

The only thing I can think off that you havenβt done is the inlet and exhaust valve clearances. The carb on my Vanguard V twin needs stripped and cleaned about once a year, that is even after I added an inline fuel filter and a fuel preserver.

Yes I would prefer to have something that is going to stand the test of time. I think some of this notch gear is not quite worth the money they ask of it. -
@Steve Bullmani think you had to show me how to use the first one I bought at Caple years backβ¦..after a few beers it wasnβt working for me.

As a triangle itβs black ?β¦. Any way Iβd say that mold is more testimony to its longevity, Iβve had two in the last 15+ years and Iβd still be in the original probably if it wasnβt in a stolen climbing kit. Bought a cheap one off eBay as a back up and it lasted two minutes before one of the steel rods poked through the side.

Good Morning I saw the news too Stubby. A sad day in someone's household. Saying that, hopefully it was quick and the chap went out doing something he loved. We can't all die peacefully in our sleep unfortunately. I remember Lady Di too. Got up on a Sunday at 6 to go and do my 8 till 8 weekend. Got in the trusty Escort Van and the radio was playing solemn music. Every station the same. Wasn't till I got to work did anybody on the radio say why. Long and unusually quiet day. Have a brilliant Sunday.

Why does the falteimer one have to be in white, every climber you see getting this mouldy looking triangle out of the van at the start of the job! Would of been better in black, maybe easier to see you throwline in the box I suppose. -

I just googled throwline cube, AliExpress under a tenner. Picture shows it with actual climbing line in, must be top quality! -

Wet, misty but not cold. Not too much to do today, so thatβs exactly what Iβll be doing.

Morning all. Continuation of wind and rain to come here. Got the airport pick up this evening so thinking I'll go a bit earlier, stop by the yard and get the mog trailer emptied ready for tomorrow's 4 dismantles. If I time it right I'll have opportunity to visit the carvery we went to after the last Sunday shift, quite fancy a roast dinner. You around today Les? Hope things ok. Have a good one folks.
