Petrol log splitter help

Hi,

I have a small petrol log splitter which is about 2 years old.

It's been working fine until now, the engine is still running as it should but after half hour of running (maybe more) the splitter ram looses all power.

Is there anything obvious I should be looking for?

It only seems to happen when it's warmed up.

Cheers for any advise

By any chance would it make a difference to the hydraulic oil used. I can't remember what the stuff I have is called but it came from countrywide in a 5l tub.

I've had a problem with air bubles in the oil before but changed the oil since and was working ok.

By oil, are you referring to engine or hydraulic?

I would say the right spec hydraulic oil would make a big difference, it should work better when warm not worse. Have our checked for leaks? Is there much space above the oil in the tank and the filling cap?

Nope, when the system is warm the oil is less viscous and any wear in the pump is accentuated

That's something I will need to check.

So the weight of the oil changes when it gets warm right? So if it's too thin, when it's warm it doesn't flow through with the highest pressure?

I have topped it up, and it's seemed to be better, but I think it was because it had time to cool down. After a bit it lost all push again

The symptoms you have described are classic worn pump

As the system warms up any wear in the pump is accentuated resulting in loss of pressure and force on the ram
