Caterpillar damage.
Possibly one of the following Moths - Erannis defoliaria - Motled Umber Euproctis chrysorrhoea - Brown Tail Hyphantria curea Limantria dispar - Gypsy Operophtera brumata - Winter Moth Would not expect these to be fatal, but could lead to persistant weakening leaving the Tree open to Armilaria etc Can you get a picture of the Caterpillar? .
