I'm not familiar with this little one!...roundish, medium brown with dark brown raised bits, perennial, about 2-3" diameter..found on buttress of early mature Oak...any body got any pointers please?....

The surface looks like it has been broken, rather than cut like you'd expect from a woody sphearoblast. And are the larvae inside the white bits?! Certainly doesn't look like the innards of any sphearoblast I've seen. A gall of some sort perhaps?

Looks like a lychee to me

 

I'm with Paul, has anybody tasted it ? It does look like it's hosting something, it would be handy to actually see it on a tree. I don't know what any of them are called but I do like to spot them as I walk round the woods.
