I knew nurses , police can for uniform/shoes etc etc but not other people. Know harm in trying i guess :001_smile:

i think it's any item of clothing that isn't suitable for wearing outside of work (ie company logo etc)

I think it only applies if you're employed by a company but expected to pay for some of your own uniform. If you are self-employed then you should already be putting workwear down as a business expense. If you are employed and your employer provides a uniform free of charge to you, then your employer will be putting uniform down as a business expense already.

beware it goes both ways, ie if it turns out you owe them you will have to cough up!

No its for cleaning the uniform, not buying it.

It's for cleaning as skyhuck says

If your employer provides you with a uniform (logo'd) or otherwise not suitable for wearing outside work then you write to the taxman and mention this. Usually get I think it's about 60 or 100 added to your taxcode. It may be a bit more.

May be peanuts but the old adage'look after pennies and pounds look after themselves applies.

My staff all do it!

I claimed this back a few years ago. Can't remember what I got but I was nothing like the figures quoted on Moneysavingexpert, but it's better off in my pocket than HMRC's or whatever they're called now.

Here's what I wrote:

I am supplied with logo bearing uniform by my employer to wear and launder, and believe I may be eligible to receive a personal tax allowance to compensate me for the costs involved.

Please be kind enough to review my current tax code and amend it accordingly if eligible. I would also be grateful if this could be backdated for the maximum period as I have been in my current position with my present employer since (date)
