Description
  • Straw coloured mushroom, with pronounced scales on cap & stem. Gills pale yellow becoming cinnamon.
Host Species
  • Oak, Beech, Robinia
Mode Of Decay
  • Parasitic. White rot around base of stems
    (though occasionally at height on trunks/unions)
Significance
  • Can cause a brittle fracture.
Distribution
  • Europe/North america

David Humphries Hello Wozza,

P. squarrosa produces a white rot (both Webber&Matthecks Manual of wood decays & the AA guide both reference it) Out of interest, what led you to believe it was a brown rotter?

Fungus Pholiota squarrosa on Robinia and Platanus is extremely dangerous, because the mycelium completely destroys the mayor roots and other sub-surface parts of the tree without either of both tree species being capable of regrowth of roots needed for stability and because of old trees falling without warning, as Pholiota squarrosa didn't have time to produce fruitbodies before the tree came down. Sometimes the fungus does not produce fruitbodies at all, because it is a biotrophic parasite, which needs its mycelium to be in contact with living structures of the tree and dies once the tree is dead.
