My v6 chainsaw thread thingy.

Feel free to jump in.

 

I'm looking at building a v6 chainsaw.

 

So first I'm looking for an engine. Obviously petrol as the weight of a diesel will be too much to handle. Any ideas on a small one.

 

Second I'm looking for a bar. Now I've seen the American ones are huge that they use so I'm going on the fact they make there's. this route I will probably have to take so need a manufacturer to make one.

 

Second is actually setting it up. I know I will need stop buttons and safety switches etc. these I can add as and when but attaching the bar and chain to engine could be very difficult. Will need to make up a sprocket that can attach to the engine. Not sure to go with some sort of clutch system or just go direct.

 

Thoughts and ideas ar more than welcome.

 

Will keep posted as to how I come along with it. :thumbup:

Why not use a centrifugal clutch from a quad bike? Should be more or less up to the task and should be fairly easy to graft onto the crank.

Engine wise, what you thinking? Something like a 2.5l Ford v6 from a mondeo....?

Hmmm ford engine. Should be ok. After everything has been stripped from it. Non essential items removed.

 

Was thinking of simple engine, can't have all the electronics on it so simple carb fed fuel, injectors and the like will add too much weight and having to attach fuel electronic systems just add to the bulk of the engine.

 

Like the quad clutch idea. Will be going round the scrap yards soon to see what's available.

A bike engine does sound more easy to do. Light and simple. Even got the clutch and drive on it already. There is a bike shop near me I can go see about any scrap engines and a bike scrap yard a few mins away.

 

Might even have a mate with an old engine. Will have to ask him.

 

The hardest part of this project is going to be the bar.

On a budget most use Harvester bars and sprockets.

 

No clutch, just a cog tooth belt connecting the flywheel to a jack shaft that powers the sprocket.

Most use an aluminum frame to hold the motor and mount the bar centered in front of the engine.

 

Carbs are a issue because of the angles required when starting the cut tilted back for a large log. If a person could sort the issues with fuel injection it would be the way to go.

 

Buick made some aluminum block v-6's.

 

Google image search for v8 hot saw will give you lots to look at.
