Training employees.. Fair and reasonable?

Just after feedback as to if I am being a fair and reasonable employer..

 

I need to put some guys through CS training. A number of them can't drive so getting them to CS courses that are always of the way is always difficult...

 

I have offered to put them on a residential course and pay for the training and accommodation, is it fair to ask for them to take the time off as holiday?

 

I paid for all my own training and would have jumped at the opportunity but my guys don't all seem to be that keen?

 

They don't have kids to look after at home..

NO, I don't think its fair - you'll get more 'use' out of them after the courses, so they will earn more money for you and you will recoup the costs eventually.

 

I would be looking at them signing some sort of bond that they must pay back the training if they leave within a certain amount of time, after all you're also making them more employable with others.

Hmmmm....obviously as the employer you have a duty to provide such H&S training as may be required to carry out the tasks. Other training, e.g. RFS Cert Arb / Level 2 arb, can be reasonably negotiated.

 

I know some contractors put a loyalty clause, in effect, in the employment contracts such that if the employee leaves the business soon after CS etc. training they will seek to claw-back, proportionally dependent upon exactly how soon, the cost of the course.

 

what's the possibility of getting a free-lance instructor / trainer to come to you maybe as an alternative.

I wouldn't ask it myself personally as I wouldn't consider it fair but it would be up to you and what you think you can afford I suppose. There might be some people very willing to do it because they have the financial backing and others may be forced to turn the opportunity down entierly or struggle financially if they do go through it because they don't have the financial backing.

Interesting to hear others views..

When I was new to the industry I would have jumped at the chance.. But then I paid for all my own training.. In all my own time..

 

I did give them the option of doing it locally and they would not have had to take holiday..
