Guys,

I have a cherry trunk about 5-6ft long, its been down for a year and 18-20" diameter.

Do I make it into firewood for myself or is there a better way to use it or sell it to a talented wood turner?

Cheers

where abouts is it?

in my opinion that can be turned in to loads of bowls or other items or it can me milled into 1" boards and turned into furniture.

I personally would just cut it up. Unless you have someone very local to you it's probably not worth a lot. I have no experience of wood turning but done a fair bit of milling and I might pay in the region of £30 if I was right there. But if it was even 10 miles away I probably wouldn't pay.

Just my opinion :)

Cost of hiring a guy for half a day to mill it ~ £150

Cost of undercover storage for a year ~ hundreds

Cost of marketing sell it ~ hours of you life answering silly questions from people with no intention of buying

If you know you have a market for it or you want to use the timber yourself go for it but I would go for it as a moneymaking scheme

I apologise if it sounds like I am being negative I am just talking from my experiance.

Here is an example of how it costs hundreds for storage.

I do not have space to store wood for a year at my house while it air dries.

Therefore for me to store it I have to rent somewhere. I looked in to this as I have a lot of equipment now it would be handy.

But a garage or container here is around £100 a month minimum.

If you already have a yard that is of course a different story.

I think your prices are highly optimistic as well Steve, if I was going to pay 35-45 per cubic foot I'd expect to be able to get all the sizes and species I wanted, as a one off with a limited selection I think your prices would be much lower (but there again I live in the north so my be way off on current southern prices). Having said that I'd still mill it but I'd do it to keep for myself.
