Tirfor Winch Length?

Hey all,

Looking to get a new cable for my tirfor winch and was just wondering what the best length of cable to go for. I am going to get a 6 m one for stump pulling and short stuff but for trees? Was looking at 30m one but now thinking 40m as will need the length to pull the tree over without it falling on me! Never want to be caught in a situation without enough length :laugh1:

as tirfor cable is expensive i have 3 normal wire cables made up with a eye at each end 10 m 30m 50 m to cover all tasks and keep them in mini tyres my tirfor cable is 20 m so to get your distance just add a standard cable . 6m will not give you much to spare if you double up with a pulley for stumps

A tirfor is a heavy lump to hump so get a shorter cable and use fibre to extend it into the tree, double braid weighs a lot less than steel, and is way easier to install in a tree.

I second that. One usually does not need to pull more than 6-7m to do the job, so I extend my 7m tirfor cable with Dyneema type ropes: same WLL as cable, way lighter.

cheers for the feedback, a few options to consider now lol.

Its very true that only need to pull several meters or so at a time so will stay with a short piece. Going to need to extend it though with something for pulling trees over. Got a T35 so going to be heavy cable or rope needed. Might go for a bull rope but could get a wire rope for same price. How to attach the tirfor wire rope to the other wire rope though? I mean attaching in with the latch hook half way up the other cable? Too many pros and cons!

Get several short ones made with an eye in each end, that way you have permutations of length
