Merrist Wood,Guildford Surrey

I have Been Offered a place at Merrist Wood College in Guildford,Surrey on the Arboriculture course and was wondering two things:

1.What do you do on the Subsidiary Diploma Course?

2.What is a Tree crane? I was told about them but I have no clue

It would help if I knew the answers to these questions, thanks

Re: Merrist Wood,Guildford Surrey

I have also been looking into the Diploma courses at Merrist wood and had a hunch somebody might have threaded something!
Have you found out any additional information about the course since you last posted?
p.s. i can't help you with either of those im affraid... unless by "Tree crane" they mean the trolley device used for moving large Potted Trees. ...A crane, is a crane whether its shifting Trees or Building materials.

If you want to ask some advice why not email Derek Hanson at the college. He has worked on the arb team there for many years, he is very friendly and helpful, if you wish you can tell him Andy (Te Woodman) put you in touch.
Best of luck with course Merristwood is a great facility, do you know it was the first college of it type in the world ?

Re: Merrist Wood,Guildford Surrey

The problem with a "tree crane" is its just one persons description of an item. Terminology can be very different in areas of the country, either that or it was written by an idiot!

It could be a forwarding unit or trailer, it could be a timber grab, or even as an old chap on my local estate calls it " a hurdygurdy!!"

In all my years in the industry, ive always used "Flat files" for saw maintenance. Yet a horticulture lecturer with no saw maintenance experience insisted on calling it a "Draw file" to students, and tried disciplinary actions to anyone questioning it!

Minus all of the above, Merrist wood has a good rep, so you will be well looked after!
LOLER inspections now available, South Lincolnshire and surrounding areas
