Hi all,

I have my heart set on buying, Alex Shigo's Modern Arboriculture - Touch Trees, but am a bit stumped as there seems to be quite a few different copys out there, ranging in colour, publishing date, condition and price! has the book changed atall over the years? 2008 is the latest one i seem to be able to find. is that the latest?

Also how do people rate the book itself?

many, many thanks for your time!

Max

The book is standard reading on all arb courses, and a great place to start before getting into some of the more scientific or technical aspects of tree care.

Personally I think it should be required reading for anyone who wants to put a chainsaw to a tree other than to fell it.

Pretty expensive though. Cheapest place I could find it is here:

Treesource Tree Care Practice

Don't think there's much difference between one copy and another, but I could be wrong. The great man died in 2006.

Modern arboriculture was for me the wrong title, more like progressive arboriculture.

the style of content delivery is a little wierd, and takes a little getting used to.

An essential book on any arbs shelf, but beware it does not leave you with a bias toward perfect pruning and a disdain for what is now eco arb.

Mine's a first impression 1991, can't see that it has changed much since then and before Shigo's death.

What makes the book approachable is the balance between illustrations and text. There isn't a page in it that is less than 50% illustration.

I would have thought Mattheck and Breloer or Lonsdale would be better for the PTI, really to pass the theory part of PTI you just have to remember a few key points that you will be taught in the course. Reading the book will just confuse, as it goes way beyond what is needed for PTI.
