Thats funny our tutor was speaking about him last night, said his lectures are very entertaining. Maybe he could tell me what 'an axiom is a precept which seems obviously true by virtue of its inherent plausibility, but generally cannot be proved'

Re: Zee Claus-meister ist back

Is anyone else planning on attending this one? I will most likely, will be based on the tensile triangles and shear squares I believe.

Anyone whos never heard Claus speak should go, he's class, and will make you laugh!

Re: Zee Claus-meister ist back

Proposed programme to include:

Compact VTA - update lecture to present the state of the art information on Visual Tree Assessment & Tree Engineering

New verdicts & selected legal points of view regarding tree diagnosis

Thinking tools free of formulae – shear square method, the tensile triangles & the brand new method of force cones

Separation shear cracks at the root buttress whose higher risk can only be understood by use of the shear squares

Hot spots of dead wood assessment

Sac fungi - a new related failure criterion

Review of new tree diagnosis tools from IML

Possibilities & limitations for age determination of perennial fungal fruit bodies

How broadleaved trees fight spiral cracks & the biomechanical similarities between the hazard beam crack and spiral crack

Re: Zee Claus-meister ist back

I thought this might be of interest.I have posted in this thread for reasons that will , I hope, become obvious. I have not read this short prospectus from Nilkas myself yet..
A summary from elsewhere..."plant biomechanics incorporates engineering principles into the biological sciences. Niklas et al. (2006) provide a historical overview of this subject, suggesting that Schwendener’s 1874 seminal monograph established the field of study. One of the primary goals for arborists is to minimize the risk of tree failure and research has turned towards biomechanics in an effort to better understand how trees withstand loading events. "
1874 eh.....? Geez, who's this Mattheck geezer anyway!!

"Ecobiomechanics"..........what a mouthfull

Looks an interesting read Tim, will try and digest & give it the time it appears to deserve.
