For my probe I bought a drill head from Wilkos for something like £1.99. You can take a rubber mallet for about a fiver but I've been given a nylon one and after experiment and hearing the difference in resonance on the harder edge I highly recommend it one.

agreed you kit doesn't have to cost a small fortune,

the nylon hammers you can buy cheaper from diy shop, but as above a rubber mallet is a good start.

I use a metal 3 piece air gun cleaning rod, its cheap, long and easy to carry.

all the probes I've seen/used are rubbish - they bend for fun!!

 

As a birder I prefer decent binoculars but a Monocular is as good usually and cheaper.

 

PTI Course I did we had access to kit and shared with others...
