Hi,

Can anyone help me identify what has taken over my Bramley apple tree, it looks like its spreading to the eating apple tree as well.

Apologies if its something obvious these are my first trees to look after.

Yep, woolly aphid. If there aren't many then meths on a swab is good. Soft soap and water is technically not allowed as a pesticide but if you feel like giving your trees a clean then coincidentally the aphids will die...

If you go and buy some bug spray make sure you look at what the active ingredient is. Most of the supermarket and garden centre squirty bottle sprays are based on thiachloprid. This doesn't work on wooly aphid.

Meths as said is as good as anything, paint it on.

Just gonna jump on board this thread, where do you find soft soap. I looked up a local garden center and could only buy a bottle of premixed stuff. Everything else mostly had permethrin in it. I wanted something more organic when my apple tree (along with the most of the garden!) was infested with black fly.

I made up a strong solution using good old washing up liquid in a pump spray on scale insect that had infested my Yew hedge - worked a treat should work with woolly aphid? although may need to do it a few times
