Hi All, I ordered some rope (Yale Hedera 13mm) but I was sent Yale 11.7, I am a novice climber would the 11.7 be sufficient ?, any advice very much appreciated.

Yale Hedera doesn't come in 13mm unless I am mistaken?

 

But in answer to your question, the diameter line has no bearing on your skill level. Personally I would stick with the 11.7mm though, its better for just about everything. Throws nicer, less drag round the tree, takes up less space in your rope bag. Your grip will soon adapt to the thinner line too

Many thanks for the quick reply, the rope was advertised as Yale XTC Hendera 130 under the heading 13mm ropes (but received 11.7 120), knowing very little I thought the size was related to the strength, but I think you have answered my question, thanks again for your prompt reply (I will keep the 11.7)

probably is a nice rope but i find the 13mm so much easier on you arms.

Steve has pointed out some of the pro's of a thinner line. What have you been using up until now?

This week was the only time I have ever used rope and I think it was 13mm, If I'm honest the 11.7 does not look any different (but I'm sure experienced climbers would notice the difference)

well the difference being you have less purchase and have to grip harder. As steve said you strength will build and it will not be a problem.

I notice it when i go from a 13 to a smaller rope.

I would stick with the 11.7....you WILL adapt and it is has far better applications like has been mentioned...what yale cordage is it?

What gear are you using? Are you using a standard Prussik or mechanical device?

That's another plus of 11.7mm rope, it works great with a knot but also works well with mechanical devices, if you go down that route later. A good compromise between the rope performance you get from an 11mm and the easy grip of a 13mm.
