How and why??

After having watched the carving at the APF show on Friday, I have a few questions.

I noticed quite a few of the carvers were working with the chains on their saws really loose, like hanging down with plenty daylight between chain and bar. Is this normal when carving?

Somebody had a round wooden ball inside a box (should have taken a photo!) - would that have been carved in one or the ball done then popped in the structure??

Amazed at peoples talents when presented with a solid lump of wood and thing of beauty emerges. Really liked the big pine cone - simple but elegent.

The ball was carved from one piece of wood.

Also the chain is loose due to the carving bar being pointed. It doesn't have a nose sprocket so if tight would could significant wear

The wear, and extra strain on the chain when it is at s 'normal' tension, is caused by the tight radius of a carving bar creating extra friction and therefore heat.

The tip gets pretty hot, even with a slack chain. HIH

Looking at those chains reminded me of one of my father's friends. Given a big enough potato, he can carve a continuous loop of interlinked chain. Each link is free moving and with great care, can be fried with the links remaining free to move.

He taught my brother how to do this. You need a really big potato, a very sharp pointed knife, lots of patience, an equal amount of care & a large bowl of fresh water.

He too could carve one free moving ball inside another free moving ball, inside a tile roofed cage. Which itself hung on a small length of free moving chain... and all from a single apple.
