Tree i.d pic

I sure this is an easy i.d for most but im first to hold my hand up and say im not that clued up on tree I,d. I drove past it and it just happened to catch my eye and just wandered what it was?

Probably kick myself up my arse for not knowing it as ive seen a couple around but not that common in this area

Thanks will look it up.

Bark was thin and spotty and looked like it almost sheds/peels/flakes off it if that's the right word hence the spotty appearance.

If it is a plane then I wont feel the need to kick myself to hard as I wouldn't of known that.

Thanks guys. I just found it a bit out the ordinary for this area.

No doubt very common in London tho! Interesting reading its good/hardy in "high pollutant" areas due to its constant shedding of bark and tolerance to withstand water shortage.

That's where the scientific names are interesting; Acer pseudoplatanus = false plane, with plane-like leaves and Platanus x hispanica (x acerfolia) plane with maple leaves.

 

To confuse you further, in the USA the common name for Plane (platanus) is sycamore:thumbup:

And Norway Maple is Acer platanoides the 'plane-like maple'. The leaves are pretty similar to P x h.
