could any body tell me what end gap should be on the piston ring when its shoved into the bore we stripped it expecting to see a picked up bore and piston but can't see anything wrong now thinking worn piston rings as the air filter seals rather poor on it

anything between 5 - 20 thou, with the former being on good new rings.

You can normally tell when the ring gets worn as the ends becone a lot thinner than the rest of the ring.

Check the bore is ok with the plating not worn through.

Measure the compression - on smaller engines it can feel low but still measure up OK.

Out of interest, where in the bore are you positioning the ring to measuring the gap, try worn and unworn section of the bore and see what if any difference there is .also are you pushing the ring down with the piston to make sure its sitting square in the bore?

Sorry if I teaching to suck eggs and all that!!

there is no difference where the ring sits in the bore and yes i am using the piston to make sure its square the end of the rings look perfect as in identical i am now thinking sloppy manufacture and plenty of tolerance not wear as i first thought
