Just a quick one.

What diameter piano wire and overall length for 16 strand?

Oh diameter in mm please as when I've looked for gauge and inch it gets a bit confusing:blushing:

I use a length of wire from a MIG welder.

Either 0.8mm or 1mm - nice and thin - nice and cheap. :001_smile:

this is what i use bro for splicing everything from 6mm globe to 20mm rigging lines. welding wire bent to fit onto a carabiner-looks rubbish but works damn well. and also the fid i use, i think its an old ice pick that slowly bent itself into the shape that works for me

Think its 22 guage piano wire

just buy one from treeworker already done

Rope splicing tools - Treeworker.co.uk

why bother for £7.50

Actually I need to buy some needles and whipping twine(will come in handy when I damage my blouse too:thumbup1:) so will probably get a fid then.

While on the subject of splicing what is it that makes old rope harder to splice?

Only rope ive spliced is ancient(in the HSE world) and yes it was tough, is new rope a lot easier?(16 strand stuff here btw)

basically it settles flattens and gets dirt and grit in and milks

just try flexing and manipulating an old rope and then try new one

or just take our word for it:thumbup:

are you trying 16 strand or double braid
