Retrenchment pruning

This was phase 1 of a retrenchment program for this oak, it had some large breakouts in the past and a small bracket that I took to be Ganoderma applanatum at the base, the rot isn't too bad so I think its got years and years left in it.

Tom, how many phases are planned for the retrenchment, and will there be set number of years between the phases?

 

I had a meeting with Neville Fay today, we chatted abit around this process.

He talked me through a series of photos of a phased retrenchment, that his company is carrying out on a Beech with both Merripilus and Ganoderma.

 

The Tree has recently had it's third retrenchment within a dozen or so years, and is programmed for a couple more yet.

The crown vitality is pretty impressive.

 

 

Did you use NFP or NTP?

NTP Monkey, we don't have a formalised plan, we'll just monitor it annualy and see what needs to be done. Probably a reduction in height in a few years time. The only problem is its in a private garden so there's no guarentee that we'll get another go at it, hopefully we will though.

I'm sure a domestic customer wouldn't mind all four stages over 30 years though

We were actually talking about carrying out the first phase with a hedge trimmer earlier on today, I kid you not.

Yes we reduced it again last year, it was such a dismal day I didn't take any pictures. Its doing well, the ganoderma hadn't grown much....
