Random Norway Spruce defect....?

Hi all,

Seeing as we are accompanied by so many budding and professionally enthusiastic characters on ArbTalk i was hoping someone may know what this picture represents?

The pictures demonstrate a sample/branch of a Norway Spruce in a private garden, one of a cross section. A number of the branches have this defect (if it is) and became evident after removing a dense coverage of ivy....

Any ideas or answers would be most appreciated....

Thanks...:confused1:
