Impressive Machine!

I have the good fortune to work one day a week in an office located at Amble Marina in Northumberland. The marina gets silted up and at low tide some of the boats are sitting in the mud. Enter the dredger! A 300 ton crane was required to lift all the gear in to the water.

 

The cutting head on the end of the ram protruding from the front of the boat, submerges and stirs the silt up which is then sucked through the pipe. The pipe exits under the rear of the boat, is coiled around the marina and then it goes under the water, across the river bed and up over the dunes on the other side and the out in to the sea. Another boat tows the end of the pipe out to see where the silt is eventually discharged.

I have been working there since 2010 and it is the first time it has happened so I feel quite privileged to be able to see it so close up.

What a beast. I saw a similar machine, much larger the day after the APF was completed at Portsmouth dreadging out the channel for your countries new Aircraft carrier soon to be delivered.
