Fitting A TrakMet Mill With An Engine

I have a limited budget to buy a mill. I was going to buy a Woodlands band mill for £2600 but then I saw that the TrakMet Standard is £4000 which is a much more heavily built machine but the problem is that it's electric only.

The location where the saw is going to spend most of its time has no mains power, I do have a 15kva PTO generator on the tractor but it's single phase only.

Even if I changed it for a 3 phase version I would have to disconnect the supply lead each time I needed to move a log with the tractor.

So I am toying with the idea of getting a TrakMet Standard and fitting a 15hp Kohler type engine to it. It turns the correct way so that won't be a problem but I know the TrakMet also uses a motor to raise the head so I would have to engineer a manual crank system.

Has anyone see a TrakMet fitted with a IC engine or can you see any potential problems?

I've also seen that they now do a TrakMet Eco for £3000, not so heavily built and with a 5.5Kw electric motor.

The Woodland at £2600 has to have £540 vat added. Ok if you can reclaim it.

I nearly bought a Woodland last month but went for a used Lumbermate 2000 instead, around the same price but so much more substantially built, and I'm really glad I did.

with the Woodland, you could beef up the rails by making a steel frame to sit it on, same as the trailer they supply drawings for. That would stiffen the whole thing up.

You could always start with a cheap mill and work your way up, if it's your intention to earn money from it. Start with a smaller budget and get the mill earning, then look to trade up.
